What is an indicative score?
An indicative score is an environmental impact result that is calculated with a streamlined LCA. A streamlined LCA keeps the four phases of ISO 14040/14044 (goal and scope, inventory, impact assessment, interpretation) but simplifies data collection and modelling. It uses more secondary data and fewer process-level inputs than a full LCA. The trade-off is precision. An indicative score is reliable for the purpose it is made for: to find hotspots, to rank material and process options, and to compare a design against a reference product inside a stated scope. It is not made to support a verified external claim.
Why textile SMEs need this now
Most textile companies know they must report environmental data. Few know how. The gap is knowledge, not intent. At the same time, the regulatory clock is running:
- The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, Reg. EU 2024/1781) is in force. Textiles are a priority product group.
- The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is expected to apply to textiles 18 months after the textile delegated act, which is expected in Q4 2027. A DPP needs product-level data.
- The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) puts large companies under a reporting duty. They pass the data request down the value chain to their suppliers, who are often SMEs.
A company that waits for the final standards will start too late. A company that starts with an indicative score builds data, routines and knowledge now, and refines them as the rules become final.
How Quick Score works
Quick Score follows three steps.
- 1Select a product scenario. Choose one of more than 200 predefined product scenarios across 18 or more textile product categories, from apparel and denim to workwear, PPE and home textiles. Each scenario is modelled with worst-case default data.
- 2Apply your primary data. Overwrite the default values with the data you have: fibre composition, weight, country of production, processes, energy. Every primary value you add replaces a worst-case default and moves the result closer to your real product.
- 3Report, understand and reduce. Read the result per supply chain step. Find the hotspot. Compare two options. Export the data for internal reporting, Scope 3 reporting or a DPP.
Worst-case defaults are a design choice. A default that is too favourable produces a result that is too low. A worst-case default can only improve when real data is added. This protects a company against an overstated claim.
Every primary value you add replaces a worst-case default.
Scope of a Quick Score result
Every Quick Score result states its scope. The scope has four parts.
Chemical and human toxicity are excluded because chemical formulations in textile processing are often undisclosed and safety data sheets are often incomplete. A toxicity result built on this data can be wrong by an order of magnitude. bAwear does not report a number it cannot support.
Quick Score compared with the alternatives
Quick Score is step 1. It is not a replacement for step 3 or 4. It makes step 3 and 4 cheaper and faster, because the product data and the hotspot map already exist.

- Brands and retailers use it to screen a collection, find the hotspot products and supply product-level data for Scope 3 reporting.
- Manufacturers use it to give footprint data to their customers, based on their own process data.
- Buyers and procurement teams use it to compare two sourcing options against the same reference product.
- Service providers such as traceability, PLM, ERP and DPP platforms connect through the API and bulk upload to bring impact data into their own workflow.
