Why now

Why do textile companies need product impact data?

Product impact data is becoming a licence to operate. CSRD asks for a credible Scope 3 baseline, ESPR and EPR reward better-designed products, and from 27 September 2026 every green claim needs evidence. Companies that measure now have the proof ready when customers, regulators and tenders ask for it.

How bAwear works

Start with a credible baseline. Sharpen it with your own data.

Quality LCA data for textiles has long been scarce. Many tools fill the gaps with poorly chosen proxies, and that creates greenwashing risk. So we built our own worst-case scenarios for every supply chain step, giving you a credible baseline from day one. Add your primary data and the result sharpens. Our worst case gets better, until it becomes your case.

BEHIND THE TOOL
"Textile companies do not need another score. They need to understand where the impact actually sits, and to trust the number enough to act on it."

Anton Luiken has worked in textile chemistry, processing and sustainability for over 40 years. He built the bAwear methodology around two principles: model the supply chain the way the industry really works, and stay conservative where data is missing rather than optimistic. Results reference ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (Hierarchist), aligned with ISO 14040/14044 principles.

Our position

Where we stand

Two questions we get asked in every methodology discussion.

How about the PEFCR and the EF database?

The Apparel & Footwear PEF Category Rules build on the European Commission's Environmental Footprint database. EF 3.1 expired in December 2025, and the Commission is working on EF 4.0, expected in 2027.

That leaves a gap: there is currently no maintained EF dataset to calculate PEFCR results against, and the category rules for apparel and footwear are not finalised.

We calculate with ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (Hierarchist) on SimaPro, aligned with ISO 14040/14044, so your results stay traceable and comparable over time. We follow the EF 4.0 work and will map our scenarios to it once it is published.

Why we don't calculate chemical toxicity

The composition and behaviour of chemicals used in textile processes are largely unknown and highly variable. Chemicals in formulations are often not fully disclosed, and their reactions during processing are complex and unpredictable.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are frequently incomplete, making accurate toxicity assessment difficult. Eco-toxicity models require known chemical structures, which are not always available.

bAwear believes that any toxicity impact calculations would be unreliable, and potentially misleading by a factor of 10-100 times, and thus prefers not to report these impact categories.

Why we exclude chemical toxicity indicators

The challenge

Sustainability criteria only work if every bid is measured the same way

01
Claims that cannot be compared

Bidders bring different methods, system boundaries and units. A label, a percentage recycled and a supplier LCA do not add up to a ranking.

02
The cheapest garment is rarely the lowest impact

A jacket that lasts twice as many washes halves its impact per wear. Criteria that stop at production reward the wrong bid.

03
Awards must hold up to challenge

Criteria have to be transparent, proportionate and verifiable. Procurement teams need that without an LCA expert on staff.

What gets assessed

The full life cycle, expressed per wear

Every bid is scored on the same product scenario and the same functional unit. Durability and end of life are part of the result, not a separate checkbox.

1
Materials

Fibre type, origin and recycled content.

2
Manufacturing

Spinning, weaving, dyeing, finishing and energy mix per location.

3
Transport

Distances and modes from mill to delivery point.

4 · Durability
Use and care

Washing, drying and the number of wash cycles a garment survives.

5 · Circularity
End of life

Reuse, fibre-to-fibre recycling, take-back or incineration.

Durability changes the ranking

Production impact is divided over the service life a bidder can substantiate. Wash-resistance evidence, for example tested to EN ISO 15797 for industrial laundering, feeds directly into the score per wear.

Unsubstantiated lifetimes fall back to a conservative default, so longer claims have to be proven.

End of life, made measurable

Fibre composition, blends, trims and take-back arrangements determine what happens after the last wear. bAwear models the end-of-life route each bidder commits to.

Mono-material and recyclable designs become visible in the result instead of in a paragraph of tender text.

Summary of the project

Textiles are one of the most resource-intensive sectors in Europe: the EU generates 6.9 million tonnes of textile waste every year, and only 12% of it is separately collected for reuse or recycling.

LIFE DPP-TEX tackles this gap by adapting Digital Product Passport (DPP) technology (building on BLUEROOM’s CircularPass platform) to give manufacturers, recyclers and public buyers a reliable way to track fibre origin, composition, recycled content and end-of-life pathways for every product.

Co-funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Union, the project brings together 8 partners from 3 countries (Spain, Bulgaria and the Netherlands) over 30 months (2026–2028). Its DPP solution is tested in two real industrial pilots: closed-loop recycling of home textiles in Bulgaria and reuse, upcycling and recycling of discarded municipal workwear in Spain. Together, the two pilots aim to process around 27 tonnes of textile waste, generate close to 60,000 circular products, create 10 new jobs, and save an estimated 110 tonnes of CO₂, 6.3 million litres of water and 1.9 million MJ of energy.

Beyond the pilots, LIFE DPP-TEX is designed to help the sector prepare for upcoming EU rules (the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the Waste Framework Directive), and to turn its results into viable business models for industry adoption, making its tools and lessons learned available for replication in other regions and other textile-related sectors.

Life DPP-Tex project

Specific objectives

LIFE DPP-TEX pursues four concrete objectives, spanning technology development, real-world validation, environmental impact measurement and regulatory readiness.

Technology

Adapt and demonstrate a Digital Product Passport for the textile sector, building on BLUEROOM’s existing CircularPass platform.

Validation

Test the DPP in two real industrial pilots: closed-loop textile recycling in Bulgaria and workwear reuse/upcycling in Spain, covering different value chains and business models.

Traceability

Track fibre origin, composition, recycled content and end-of-life pathway for every product processed in the pilots.

Environmental impact

Quantify the environmental benefits of circular textile practices (CO₂, water and energy savings) through integrated Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data.

Regulatory readiness

Support compliance with the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the Waste Framework Directive, helping the sector prepare ahead of mandatory requirements.

Industry adoption and replication

Turn pilot results into viable business models for industry adoption and enable replication of the DPP solution to other regions and other textile-related sectors, supported by an After-LIFE Plan and transferability roadmap.

Introduction
Tricorp

Building insight, then putting it to work in sourcing and design

Tricorp is a Dutch workwear brand supplying corporate and protective clothing across Europe. As customer demand for transparent product impact data grew, Tricorp wanted to move away from assumption-based decisions and start steering its collections with credible environmental data instead. To do so, Tricorp partnered with bAwear, working with the Expert tier of bAwear Score, an LCA-based environmental impact measurement and reporting tool, to build that insight and put it to work in sourcing and design.

Challenge

Not enough insight, and data that was hard to get

Before working with bAwear, Tricorp lacked sufficient insight into the environmental impact of its products. Improving that impact in a data-driven way, rather than relying on assumptions, required a clearer picture, a need made more urgent by growing customer demand for transparent product impact data. Gathering and interpreting that data brought its own obstacles:

{{ o.text }}
Solution

LCA-Based Impact Measurement with bAwear Score

Tricorp adopted the Expert tier of bAwear Score to measure the environmental impact of its products against ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (Hierarchist), in line with ISO 14040/44 and the direction set by the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for Apparel & Footwear. Rather than relying on estimates, Tricorp now works with substantiated, comparable impact data, with bAwear's team available to provide additional context whenever results need further explanation.

Reliable, substantiated sustainability data also helps Tricorp work toward current and upcoming regulatory requirements. Impact reports play a role in tenders as well, giving Tricorp a concrete and credible way to substantiate its sustainability ambitions and performance to contracting authorities and customers. The underlying insights continue to inform strategic choices as Tricorp works to improve its products and processes over time.

Why Tricorp chose bAwear

Consistency of data,
and a team that thinks along

Tricorp chose to continue working with bAwear based on a track record of successful, pleasant and reliable collaboration. Consistency and comparability of data are essential to Tricorp: staying with the same LCA partner allows results to be compared meaningfully year over year, while switching providers would disrupt that comparability and reduce the value of the data collected so far.

Tricorp also highlights the guidance, onboarding and support it receives from the bAwear team, including Anton, Jesse, Prerana and Evie, as a strong part of the collaboration, describing a team that thinks along actively and delivers tailored support so Tricorp can get the most out of its data.

"We used to steer our sourcing decisions on assumptions. Working with bAwear lets us steer on data instead, from shifting to recycled materials and organic cotton, to calculating our CO2 emissions far more precisely."

"Our advice: look at the value impact data delivers, not the effort it seems to take. It gives you the insight and clarity to make better-substantiated choices and to steer more precisely toward real improvement. It also helps you prepare for future regulation and strengthens your position with customers and in tenders. Start building that knowledge now, even on a small scale. It pays off in the long run. In short: don't hesitate, just do it."

Final Thoughts

One collection at a time

Tricorp's move from assumption-based to data-driven sourcing shows how substantiated environmental impact data can support day-to-day decisions on materials, suppliers and design, while also strengthening a company's position in tenders and its readiness for upcoming regulation. Through its ongoing collaboration with bAwear, Tricorp continues to build on that foundation, one collection at a time.

About the client
Blycolin

Linen service for hospitality, run as one chain since 1972

Blycolin is a specialist in linen service for hotels, restaurants and wellness locations. It takes over the full linen management: selection and purchasing, rental and stock, washing and logistics, quality monitoring, reuse and recycling. The linen stays Blycolin's property, on a pay-per-use model. That means every material and sourcing choice Blycolin makes is felt across millions of wash cycles.

Headquartered in Zaltbommel, Blycolin operates eleven own laundries and works with more than a hundred partner laundries across the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland and Poland. ESG has been anchored in the organization since 2016, guided by SDG 8 and SDG 12, and the company publishes an annual ESG report with measured targets toward 2030 and 2050.

"Where we used to steer more on experience and intuition, we now base decisions more and more on data. ESG has become a fixed part of how we run the company."

Marc van Boekholt, CEO, Blycolin. Blycolin ESG Report 2025, translated from Dutch.
The challenge

Impact is decided at procurement. The data to see it usually is not there.

Textile service providers know the environmental impact of their product largely gets decided at procurement: fiber origin, material choice, production location, end-of-life options. What most lack is not intent but data infrastructure, the ability to see, per product, what a material or sourcing decision does to CO2 emissions, water use and raw material demand.

That knowledge gap now meets regulatory urgency. CSRD requires substantiated sustainability reporting, the ESPR (Reg. EU 2024/1781) sets ecodesign requirements, and the textile delegated act for the Digital Product Passport is expected in Q4 2027, with 18 months to implement. Companies that cannot quantify product-level impact today will struggle to comply tomorrow.

Delegated act expected Q4 2027, then 18 months to implement.

Blycolin chose to get ahead of this: not with claims, but with measurement. Its 2030 target of at least 90% sustainable products in the collection needed a way to prove progress per product.

The approach

A steering instrument,
not a snapshot

Blycolin works with bAwear on LCA-based impact measurement of its textile collection. In 2025, existing life cycle analyses were updated and recalculated in collaboration with bAwear, making results comparable against earlier baselines and showing clear improvements versus 2021.

The LCAs quantify the impact of material and product choices on CO2 emissions, water use and raw materials, consistent with ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (Hierarchist), aligned with ISO 14040/14044. Materials are foundational: the analyses start from what a product is made of and where it is produced. The digital layer turns material facts into decision-making intelligence for procurement and product development.

In Blycolin's words
Blycolin

From measured LCAs to a collection that is 58% Basic tier today and heading for 90% more sustainable products by 2030. This is how Blycolin looks back on the work.

“

We already did a lot. Now we make it visible. Choices are based on data more and more, instead of assumptions.

"The past year was about building insight. We invested heavily in collecting, checking and understanding data. We could have set targets faster, but not with the same certainty. That approach gave us a firmer base: not only numbers, but more knowledge of processes and impact. That creates room to steer more precisely and to substantiate choices better."

"You have to make choices, otherwise you make no impact anywhere. We looked at where we could make the most impact and put our priority there: CO2 reduction, chain collaboration and material choices. Quality remains our reason to exist. If it declines we have to replace sooner, and then you end up being less sustainable. So new materials are tested, learned from and adjusted before we scale."

Answering client questions, and standing up in tenders

Schijvens is a Dutch corporate workwear company, active since 1863, producing professional workwear for businesses and organizations. Schijvens regularly receives questions from clients about the impact of sustainable articles: what is the actual impact, and what does it mean in concrete terms? At the same time, tenders and public procurement create a need to make the measurable environmental impact of Schijvens’ own products and processes insightful, so it can be compared clearly against competing offers.

Challenge

Clear answers for clients, and data that was hard to get

Schijvens wanted to be able to give clients a clear, well-substantiated answer to questions about the impact of sustainable articles. For tenders, it was equally important to make the environmental impact of its own process measurable and comparable. Gathering and understanding the underlying data brought its own obstacles:

Solution

LCA-Based Impact Measurement with bAwear Score

With bAwear Score, Schijvens has the environmental impact of its products and processes calculated through LCA, in a fair and validated way, measured against ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (Hierarchist) and following ISO 14040/44 principles. Introduction
Coulisse

An acquisition became the moment to measure impact

Coulisse is a Dutch window coverings company producing fabrics and blinds, including for honeycomb and pleated window coverings. On 1 January 2024, Coulisse acquired the fabric manufacturer Lienesch. Before the acquisition, Lienesch had its own label for recycled fabrics, called Truel. After joining Coulisse, where sustainable certification for these fabrics was not yet in place, the recycled fabric range moved over to bAwear, which is when the environmental impact of the recycled textiles were calculated.

Challenge

The data sat with the suppliers

The main challenge in gathering impact data did not sit with Coulisse itself, but with its suppliers.

{{ o.text }}
Solution

LCA-Based Impact Measurement with bAwear Score

With bAwear Score, Coulisse's recycled fabrics moved onto a single tool that measures environmental impact through LCA, replacing the earlier combination of the True label and the Remokey tool used at Lienesch. Assessments are measured against ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (Hierarchist) and follow ISO 14040/44 principles. Coulisse describes bAwear's guidance, onboarding and support as very accessible, approachable and accurate, including the option of an in-person visit alongside online meetings, with email questions answered quickly.

Why Coulisse Chose bAwear

A contact that carried over
from Lienesch

Coulisse's connection to bAwear traces back to Lienesch: the contact already existed from that earlier company, where the recycled-fabric label True was supported by the Remokey tool. When Coulisse needed a new solution for recycled-fabric impact data after the acquisition, that existing contact carried over naturally.

"I experienced bAwear as very accessible, approachable and accurate. It was also easy to schedule an in-person visit alongside the online meetings, and email questions were answered quickly. All in all, a very pleasant experience."

"Make sure you're clear for yourself on the impact a product has, so you can work on improvements starting from the design. And beyond the environmental aspect, with an eye on current and future regulation, it's wise to start collecting data as early as possible."

Final Thoughts

A foundation to build on

Coulisse's move to bAwear shows how a change in ownership can also become a natural point to consolidate impact data onto a single, LCA-based tool. With clear internal impact figures for its recycled fabrics now in place, and customer interest in impact reports on the rise, Coulisse has laid a foundation it can build on as its use of that data, in design decisions, tenders and compliance, continues to develop.

Turn LCA data
into competitive advantage

Coulisse consolidated its recycled fabric range onto one LCA-based tool and can now hand interested customers an impact report. Start with a Quick Score on your own range and see where the impact sits.

Zeeman

A commitment that had to work at scale

Zeeman is a Dutch retail chain offering affordable apparel and home textiles across Europe. As part of its 2023 to 2027 strategic plan, Zeeman committed to understanding the environmental footprint of every product in order to continue minimizing its impact on the planet. Turning that commitment into practice across a large, diverse product range, spanning men's, women's, baby's and children's apparel as well as interior textiles and decorative items, required a practical way to assess environmental impact at scale.

Challenge

Four goals, and data that would not cooperate

Zeeman set out to:

{{ g.n }} {{ g.text }}

Getting there was not straightforward. Supply chain data was inconsistent and fragmented across such a wide range of products, which made full-scale Life Cycle Assessment calculations for hundreds of products impractical within a reasonable timeframe.

Solution

LCA-Based Impact Measurement with bAwear Score

Zeeman implemented the Quick Score tier of bAwear Score to calculate cradle-to-gate environmental impact, measured against ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (Hierarchist) and following ISO 14040/44 principles and the direction set by the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for Apparel and Footwear. Where Zeeman could supply primary data, such as material composition, spinning method, fabric construction and transport, bAwear used it directly. Where primary data was not available, bAwear filled the gaps with worst-case secondary data from its own database and ecoinvent 3.8. Combining the two made it possible to build detailed product scenarios without waiting on data that suppliers could not yet provide.

Fast, credible insight, even with data gaps

Zeeman's work with bAwear showed that a large retailer can assess a diverse product portfolio quickly and credibly, even with data gaps. By combining available primary data with worst-case secondary data, bAwear's Quick Score delivered fast, actionable insight across nearly 200 products, giving Zeeman both the intelligence and the framework to extend data-driven, impact-based decisions across its wider product portfolio over time.

Working with its own data, not fixed defaults

HAVEP is a Dutch workwear and protective wear company based in Goirle. HAVEP had already worked with bAwear on LCA measurement for several years before this collaboration, and set out to work more flexibly with primary data, adapting standard assessment scenarios to fit its own supply chain rather than relying only on fixed defaults. Building as much transparency into its supply chain as possible is a priority for HAVEP, and the company wanted a practical way to put the resulting data to use rather than treating it as a one-off exercise.

Challenge

Not access to data, but its depth, precision and integration

Because HAVEP had already worked with bAwear on LCA measurement for several years, the first challenge many companies face, simply getting the underlying data in hand, had already been addressed. The obstacles HAVEP still runs into are less about access to data and more about its depth, precision and integration:

LCA-Based Impact Measurement with bAwear Score

With bAwear Score, HAVEP can process primary data more flexibly and adapt standard scenarios to its own situation, with assessments measured against ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (Hierarchist) and following ISO 14040/44 principles. When HAVEP introduces new or innovative materials, bAwear assesses and calculates their impact quickly and professionally, and HAVEP can build and reuse its own scenarios rather than starting from generic defaults each time, which makes the resulting figures more precise. Why HAVEP Chose bAwear

Knowledge of textiles,
over several years

HAVEP chose bAwear specifically for its knowledge of textiles, a factor that matters given how material- and process-specific LCA calculations in this sector can be. That choice is reflected in a collaboration that now spans several years, over which HAVEP has come to describe bAwear’s guidance, onboarding and support as very good, backed by strong subject-matter knowledge.

Final Thoughts

Going further still

HAVEP’s work with bAwear shows how a flexible, data-driven approach to LCA can help a company that already has years of measurement experience go further still: working with its own primary data and scenarios instead of fixed defaults, assessing new materials quickly as they come in, and using the results to steer toward lower-impact materials and more circular alternatives such as chemical recycling. The gaps HAVEP still points to, such as full chain visibility and a more integrated way of translating substance data into finished products, mark the direction for where that collaboration goes next. In the meantime, HAVEP continues to report its impact data to clients and stakeholders as part of its day-to-day compliance work.
